IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES!
August 31, 2015
Dear P.S. 87 Parents and Guardians,
Welcome forward to the start of a brand new school year! The staff has
been busy preparing for the return of your children and I would like to take
this opportunity to welcome returning and new families to our P.S. 87 school
community!
For the past five years our school system has been undergoing tremendous
reforms. Students are held to
considerably higher bars as schools align instruction to the Common Core
Learning Standards (CCLS). These
standards introduce more writing, problem solving, and critical thinking skills
across all subject areas and grade levels.
The staff at P.S. 87 worked hard last year to adjust the new Common Core
aligned curricula in ELA (ReadyGen) and Math (Go Math) and we produced gains in
our 2014-15 ELA & Math scores. Raising the level of teaching and
learning to meet the new standards is a multi-year initiative. Teachers
will be engaging in professional learning throughout the year and workshops
will be provided for parents regarding the school’s instructional programs. Our children need strong reading skills to
access the level of reading and comprehension that the Common Core Standards
require. In addition to our ELA
curriculum, students will have access high interest books because they will
have access to an online reading program called MYON. All students in our school will have free access
to a library of
more than 8,000 enhanced digital books with multimedia supports
from any phone, tablet,
laptop or computer, 24 hours a day! It
is our goal that students will use this additional resource to become stronger
readers.
We will take our commitment of increased
parent communication another step further this year. Parents will be able to log into PupilPath,
an online program, to see their children’s scores in their most recent
assignments. Our PS87.org website will be launched this year and will also
serve as a valuable link to our school community.
Classroom teachers will, as always, be your
main point of contact with the school and source of information. Susan Garcia,
our Parent Coordinator, is available to assist you. Her office number is 718-324-5188 Ext. 2110
and her cell number is 347-563-4963. We
will also continue to focus on our efforts to increase the participation of
fathers in our school through our “Fatherhood in the 21st Century”
for fathers. Please check your
children’s book bags for the monthly calendars and important notices that
inform you of upcoming activities within our school throughout the school year.
This information will also be available on our PS87.org website.
We look forward to working with you to create a year that brims with growth and
accomplishments for our students. On the reverse side of this
letter you will find a list of important dates to remember in September and information
to make the first days of school a smooth transition for both you and your
children.
On behalf of the staff at P.S. 87, I welcome you!
Sincerely,
Donna Anaman, Principal
Principal
